Organizing our ferry discoveries has given us pause. We first discussed organizing ferry operations by tributaries or distributaries  of the Colorado River. That worked for about 10 minutes and then we realized there were some rivers within the Four Corner states (not the "Four Corners" area) that were neither tributaries or distributaries (i.e. The Rio Grande River) of the Colorado but contained significant ferry operations we couldn't overlook. And then, how were we to handle a ferry that operated on the Colorado River but originated in . . . say, Nevada?

We are still working a lot of this out but we have organized our research a bit, which we will ultimately present in our published work.

But for now, here is a constantly evolving list of ferry operations as we discover them. Please note that we have decided to list all operations, whether they are a newly discovered, independent ferry in a new location or simply a new owner of a ferry that was in operation at the same location. If the ferry was known by a different name, it will be listed as an separate operation. Our main determining factor is whether a ferry was a commercial operation or not. In some states, especially Utah, private ranches maintained a ferry simply to facilitate the running of ranching operations. Generally, if money was not charged to transport someone across a river, we are not including that ferry in our research.

Some ferries we have given generic names. The historical archives show there was a ferry located there but we haven't discovered the name of the ferry or the ferrymaster.
